With a slip of a screwdriver, travelling salesman, P.L. Robertson, of Milton, Ontario, cut his hand while demonstrating a spring loaded screwdriver. This accident inspired Robertson to invent a 'better' screw, gaining a patent for his Robertson fastener in 1909. Robertson's socket head screw changed the industry and soared in popularity. Eventually Robertson produced socket screws for the metal bodied Ford Model A. Impressed with reduced product damage and sped up production, Henry Ford tried to gain an exclusive license for the screws for his car company, but Robertson refused. Ford ended up licensing the Phillips screw. Robertson screws are only common in Canada. Style:
